Submission Guidelines

Authors submitting manuscripts should go to our web-based submissions system at philosophicalreview.org and create an account and upload the paper there. There is a text box for comments or questions. Only one submission per corresponding author is allowed at a time, and only one submission per twelve months. Any author submitting a paper found to be in violation of our policy against concurrent submission to another journal will incur a five-year ban on submitting papers to the Philosophical Review.

For more information about the submission process, please see our Editorial Policies for Authors.

Manuscripts must not have been published previously, in part or in whole, or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Neither the author's name nor the author's affiliation should be included in the manuscript, and any acknowledgments or references to the author's own work should not reveal the author's identity. Any prefatory or explanatory remarks intended for the editors or readers should be brief and should be in the e-mail and not part of the submitted manuscript, so that they may be kept anonymous by the editorial office.

The Philosophical Review practices a system of triple-blind review. The identity of a manuscript’s author is never revealed to referees, nor is the identity of referees ever revealed to authors, and the author’s identity is not revealed to editors until after they have reached a final (accept/reject) decision on the manuscript.

Double-space all text, including extracts and notes; all pages must be numbered and have margins of at least one inch on all sides. Please use a 12-point font size. We accept papers in PDF format only. We do not accept papers in Word, RTF, or LaTeX.  Please be sure to include an approximately 150-word abstract at the top of your paper and a word count. There is no set maximum for paper length; however, authors are discouraged from submitting papers that exceed 15,000 words including abstract, references, and footnotes. Manuscripts chosen for publication must eventually conform to The Chicago Manual of Style, eighteenth edition. Include a SEPARATE LIST OF WORKS CITED at the end of the paper, using FULL AUTHOR NAMES (not first initials).

Book reviews: Unsolicited book reviews are not accepted. Publishers and authors wishing their books to be considered for review may email the Editorial Manager at phil-review@cornell.edu.

ABSTRACT REQUIRED: Please submit an approximately 150-word ABSTRACT at the top of your manuscript (in the same file).

WORD COUNT REQUIRED: Please submit the word count at the top of the paper (or near the abstract).

FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS: Double-space all text, including extracts and notes; all pages must be numbered and have margins of at least one inch on all sides. Please use a 12-POINT FONT SIZE. We accept papers in PDF format. We do NOT currently accept documents submitted in LaTeX, Word, or RTF. DO NOT ADD LINE NUMBERING.

—For your initial submission, include a LIST OF WORKS CITED at the end of the paper, using FULL AUTHOR NAMES (not first initials). Manuscripts chosen for publication must eventually conform to The Chicago Manual of Style, seventeenth edition.

PAPER LENGTH: There is no set maximum for paper length; however, authors are generally discouraged from submitting papers that exceed 15,000 words INCLUDING ABSTRACTREFERENCESAND FOOTNOTES.

The most frequent reasons a manuscript is sent back to an author during the initial submission process are:

—No word count included at top of paper
—incorrect citation style (required: List of works cited at end of paper. Full names of authors, not initials.)
—No abstract included
—not in PDF format
—not sufficiently anonymized
—not double spaced
—font size not 12 point or larger

For the manuscript to be anonymized properly it must not have your name or institution on the manuscript; you must not thank anyone by name or institution in the acknowledgments (this can be filled in later should your manuscript be accepted) or in the text or footnotes; and author references should either be sufficiently disguised by referring to them in the third person, or eliminated. We no longer encourage citing yourself as “author reference” or “author redacted,” as it may tend to reveal your identity. Additionally, if you have many self-citations, we suggest reducing the number by eliminating those that are “unpublished manuscripts” or “forthcoming,” when feasible.

Authors are asked to REMOVE all potentially de-anonymizing but not strictly necessary remarks from their submission, including any references to, or descriptions of the contents of, their other work, published or unpublished. Only in cases where such references are absolutely necessary (e.g., to prevent charges of plagiarism, or of gaps in an argument) are authors allowed to make minimal references to their other work, either by referring to themselves in the 3rd person, or by using such phrases as [Redacted] or [Anonymized].

The Philosophical Review rigorously practices “triple-blind” review. Only the Editorial Manager knows your identity until a decision has been reached by the editors.

COVER LETTERS ARE NOT NECESSARY AND ARE NOT READ BY THE EDITORS. A note to the Editorial Manager is allowed if needed.

Manuscripts must not have been published previously, in part or in whole, or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Neither the author’s name nor the author’s affiliation should be included in the manuscript, and any acknowledgments should be removed. References to the author’s own work should not reveal the author’s identity. Any prefatory or explanatory remarks intended for the editors or readers must be given in the comments box available on this site when you submit your manuscript. They will be read only by the editorial manager.

Please see our submissions statistics here: https://philreview.gorgesapps.us/statistics

In summer months there may be a delay in papers being read.
